Visual Resources for Teaching Operations Research

I am João Sarubbi, a Full Professor of Computer Science at CEFET-MG in Brazil, where I teach Operations Research, Discrete Mathematics and Graph Theory. Over the past few years, I have been developing a collection of visual teaching resources on YouTube to support students in these areas. The channel is available here: https://www.youtube.com/@joaosarubbi One of the motivations behind the project came from something I frequently observe in the classroom. In Operations Research, students may learn how to perform calculations or reproduce the steps of an algorithm before they fully understand the structure of the problem they are solving. They may know what to do next while still having difficulty seeing the modelling decisions, the relationships between variables and constraints, or the reasoning behind each step. For this reason, I have tried to combine mathematical explanation with visualisation, animations, worked examples and exercises. Rather than presenting only the mech...

Talk Alert!! From Grid to Dialogue: Unlocking the Value of a 2x2 Matrix in a Business Analytics Classroom, 30th Sept 25 17:00 to 18:00 BST

As we all get settled into a new terms teaching, meeting this years students and welcoming back those who are progressing, the BAEF is pleased to announce an interesting and highly relevant talk. Save the date: Tuesday 30th September 5pm to 6pm (BST) From Grid to Dialogue: Unlocking the Value of a 2x2 Matrix in a Business Analytics Classroom Presented by David Sammon Brief Description of the Session The humble 2x2 matrix is more than just a visual aid, it's a powerful teaching artefact that can spark dialogue, surface tensions, and scaffold complex thinking in the Business Analytics classroom. In this talk, I will share my experience designing and using 2x2 matrices to promote analytical thinking and reflective practice across undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive education contexts. I will introduce four original matrices that emerged from practice and scholarly engagement, including: the BIG DATA Matrix, the Analytics Strategy Design Matrix, the Problem Validation Matrix, an...
