How Many Robots Does a Healthcare Logistics Operation Need? From Industry Project to Teaching Case

Brief Description of the Session

Business Analytics education often starts after the hardest parts of an analytics problem have already been removed: the problem is defined, the data are prepared, and the analytical method is known. Real industry projects rarely work this way.

In this talk, I draw on an industry-engaged healthcare logistics project in Singapore to show how operational research and simulation-based analytics were used to support decisions on automation, including robot fleet size, routing, scheduling, and service performance. I then show how the same project can be translated into an authentic Business Analytics teaching case using anonymised or synthetic data, progressive disclosure, scenario analysis, and decision-focused assessment. The broader aim is to demonstrate how live industry projects can help students move beyond applying analytical techniques towards structuring problems, managing uncertainty, and defending evidence-based managerial recommendations.

There is plenty more happening around BAEF too. Our latest YouTube conversation with Lukas Waeschle from Node24 explores why SMEs can invest in innovation yet still struggle to turn it into competitive advantage, and how better product and market information can help move firms beyond analysis paralysis.

We’ve also just launched a new Spotify channel, so BAEF conversations and talks are now easier to listen to on the move. You can find more of our content in the excellent Design Talks podcasts, curated by the inimitable Allen Higgins, who also curates our YouTube content.

And there is more to come. Keep an eye on our emails and blog page for upcoming talks, practical teaching ideas and useful educational materials from across the analytics education community.

Please also join our LinkedIn group for regular posts about all things analytics education. We’d love it to be a place where members share ideas, resources and experiences too.

See you soon, Chris, Anabela, and Allen (the BAEF team)
